Daizen Maeda described his show-stopping overhead kick to help his team win a Scottish Premiership match in Glasgow on Sunday as "lucky." No one agreed. The goal, his second of the match, completed Celtic's comeback in a 3-1 win over the archrival Rangers as the teams compete for the league title, per the AP. Maeda credited his teammates, per OneFootball.com, saying, "Everything that came to me came from the hard work of the team, so I really appreciate their work." He has 14 goals this season but has picked up the pace with six in his last four matches. Asked about the change by the Glasgow Times, Maeda answered: "I think it's because of the fans. We want to pay them back and work hard for them." His coach called the bicycle kick "out of this world," per the Telegraph, and coverage called it "outrageous" and "absolute cinema." Sportswriters tried to do it justice:

  • The Guardian: "Tounetki sends a bobbling ball into the box, Maeda's first touch is up above his head, back to goal, and he launches himself into an overhead kick that lands inside the far post! My word."
  • The BBC: "Time seemed momentarily suspended as the Japan striker's overhead effort arced inexorably beyond Butland's flailing left hand. It was a moment of outstanding quality."
  • The Independent: "It will go down as one of the great goals in the long history of this fixture."
  • Manager Martin O'Neill, per 67 Hail Hail: "I'm going to take him out tonight."
