Eric Clapton Halts Madrid Show After Fan Throws Object

Eric Clapton's first Madrid show in a quarter century ended abruptly after something more than applause came flying out of the crowd. Entertainment Weekly reports that the 81-year-old guitarist was heading toward the back of the stage at Movistar Arena on Thursday, just after playing "Cocaine," when a fan hurled what appeared to be a vinyl record that hit him in the chest, video from the concert shows. Clapton recoiled but didn't appear injured. Still, he skipped his planned encore, a Bo Diddley cover that has been closing his current tour.

"Eric is fine," his official fan site WheresEric.com later noted. "We are fans ourselves and we understand everyone is excited to be at the show, but please do not throw anything at the stage. You can seriously injure someone in the band, the crew, venue staff, or even another concertgoer." Clapton resumed the tour without incident three nights later in Barcelona. He's set to finish the European leg on May 17 in Munich before heading to the US in September, wrapping up in Austin, Texas, at his Crossroads Guitar Festival. The Madrid episode adds Clapton's name to a growing list of artists pelted midshow, a group that in recent years has included Harry Styles and Bebe Rexha.
