Obama's Big Gun in November: Michelle

With the president's popularity taking a drubbing, Democrats are looking to Michelle Obama to lead the charge into the midterm elections. As was the case with Laura Bush, the first lady's popularity has remained solid as her husband's dwindled, and party faithful are hoping that Michelle can put some muscle into some key races. Politico breaks down the five most likely:

• Nevada Senate race: Harry Reid's opponent has extremist views, and he's still in a tight contest. The first lady test-stumped for him in June, calling him “one of my favorite people in the world"—aids called her support an "incredible force."
• Pennsylvania Senate race: Joe Sestak may not have wanted a job from the White House, but if it were in the business of lending a hand, "my No. 1 choice ... is Michelle Obama."
• Illinois gubernatorial race: Barack might join her here, where both Obamas are still hugely popular and could boost the profile of incumbent Pat Quinn against GOP challenger Bill Brady, who leads by 7 points.
