Meet the New Women of Pop

Women are front and center in the world of pop music this fall. Three of the most exciting up-and-comers catch the ear of Lizzy Goodman, writing in New York:

• Amanda Blank, I Love You: The Philly-based MC “is a white girl from the burbs who dresses, talks, and raps like Foxy Brown,” unafraid to make “astonishing boasts” in her music—and “easily shifting from urban rapper to hipster.”

• Elly Jackson, La Roux: Jackson founded British synth-pop duo La Roux in 2006 and quickly became a teen icon, “with her bright orange new-wave crop.” Her music, “at once austere and emotional, recalls classic synth pop like the Human League and Heaven 17.”
• Jemina Pearl, Break It Up: “As the demented pixie singer for Nashville punks Be Your Own Pet, Pearl was a caricature of adolescent disdain, which made sense because she was a disdainful adolescent at the time.” Now that she’s grown up a bit, she’s released her own “fast, frilly, and effortlessly catchy” effort.
