An Ohio dentist's missed shift led authorities to uncover a double killing that has left two young children without their parents and police hunting for a gunman. Officers conducting a welfare check Tuesday morning at the Columbus home of Spencer Tepe, 37, and his wife, Monique, 39, found the couple inside with gunshot wounds, ABC News reports. Paramedics pronounced both dead at the scene. WSYX reports that Spencer had multiple gunshot wounds and Monique at least one to the chest. Their two young children were discovered in the home unharmed.

The visit was triggered when Tepe didn't show up for work at Athens Dental Depot, prompting his employer to call 911. "He did not show up to work this morning. And we cannot get a hold of him or his family," Dr. Mark Valrose told dispatchers. "He's been reliable, and we cannot get in touch with him, his wife, his family, anybody that lives in that house." Police were first contacted just after 9am, records show. An officer responded but left after getting no answer at the door. Around an hour later, another caller reported hearing children inside.

A friend who said he had last spoken to Spencer Tepe told dispatchers that he could see his body next to a bed, the Columbus Dispatch reports. He said he had gone to the home because Tepe wasn't answering his phone. Investigators say there were no obvious signs of forced entry and no weapons were found in the home. Authorities do not believe the deaths were a murder-suicide, WSYX reports, and no suspect has been publicly identified. The couple, married in 2021, were about a month away from their fifth anniversary.
