Chappell Roan's RIP to Brigitte Bardot didn't survive a second look. After news broke that the French film icon had died over the weekend at age 91, the singer briefly honored her on Instagram, calling Bardot her inspiration for the song "Red Wine Supernova." Lyrics for that 2023 track include: "She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot / She showed me things I didn't know." By Monday, however, Roan's tribute was gone, replaced with a blunt clarification in a follow-up post, per the Hollywood Reporter. "Holy s--- i did not know all that insane shit Ms. Bardot stood for," Roan wrote, adding, "I do not condone this. Very disappointing to learn."

For years, the actor was best known for roles in films like And God Created Woman and Contempt, and for leaving movies in her 30s to champion animal rights. But Bardot's political record has long drawn criticism: She embraced France's far right, supported National Front figures including Marine Le Pen, railed against what she called the "Islamization" of France, and targeted the LGBTQ+ community and immigrants, especially Muslims. Variety notes that Bardot was convicted at least five times in France for firing up racial hatred.
