James Evans and Easha Rayel disappeared without a trace on August 9, and police in Canada had received tips that they were seen as far as 300 miles from the Canadian couple's Vancouver Island home. The sightings were wrong. The bodies of Evans, 23, and Rayal, 36, were found Saturday in a BMW down a deep ditch off a highway—just a few miles from the couple's home in Sidney. Evans' father confirmed the deaths. "I don't think [police] are too impressed that they drive by it every day and, you know, it took them two weeks to figure it out," he tells CTV News. He speculates that that the "front tire popped on the car" or they hit a deer.
Police had described the disappearance as "concerning and out of character" for the couple but said they might've been traveling to British Columbia's Lower Mainland. The speculation ended this weekend, when a person walking along Patricia Bay Highway just south of Sidney on Aug. 24 spotted the car in a ditch among thick overgrowth, reports the Guardian. "People see the ditch, but they often don't realize how steep it is," says RCMP constable Meighan de Pass. She tells the CBC there were no marks on the straight stretch of road to indicate a crash. "Hopefully, we will find an answer with the investigation," she says. "But sometimes we don't." (More car accident stories.)
