Criticism of Fox News as a "propaganda machine … wittingly harming our system of government for profit" is making waves because of its source: longtime Fox military analyst and retired US Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters. In a letter to colleagues announcing he would not be renewing his contract with Fox (read it in full at BuzzFeed), the conservative Peters wrote that he was "ashamed" of his association with a network operating as "a mere propaganda machine for a destructive and ethically ruinous administration." Some background and reaction:
- Main complaint: Fox hosts, "who, justifiably, savaged President Obama for his duplicitous folly with Putin, now advance Putin's agenda by making light of Russian penetration of our elections and the Trump campaign," Peters writes. BuzzFeed notes that Peters was previously suspended for calling Obama a "total p---y" on air and once said Obama was "date raped" by Vladimir Putin.
- Fox responds: The network says it's "extremely proud" of its work. "Ralph Peters is entitled to his opinion despite the fact that he's choosing to use it as a weapon in order to gain attention," it notes in a statement cited by BuzzFeed.
- The timing: CNN suggests the letter might have been timed to kill the "very positive" vibes that emerged from Fox's quarterly meeting earlier Tuesday. "The thing hit like a bombshell," one employee says.
