Some drama unfolded in a Costco parking lot in New Jersey yesterday when police smashed the window of a minivan to rescue a young girl, reports NJ.com. The toddler is OK. Bystanders noticed that the girl inside was sweating and crying and tried unsuccessfully to pry open a slightly cracked window. Bergen County Sheriff's Officer Rich Carrion arrived and smashed in a window with his baton. He estimated it was 80 degrees inside the car, and the girl was "sweating profusely." A female officer on the scene pulled her out and comforted her.
Police charged the girl's mother, Chaeyoung Lim-Kim, with child endangerment when she arrived on the scene with another child and a full shopping cart soon after the rescue. ABC7 recounts the following exchange: "Is this your kid?" asked the female officer. "Sorry," the mother replied. "No sorry. She could have died." Police turned over the girl, along with the older child who had accompanied the mother into the store, to the children's father. (More child left in hot car stories.)
