Passed over for the All-Star Game yet again, lanky swingman Tayshaun Prince responded by deposing the Lakers with a late three-pointer, sealing it 90-89. Prince led the Pistons with 22 points and left Los Angeles with 4.5 seconds in regulation; although Kobe Bryant scored 39, the last shot was taken—and airballed—by Lamar Odom.

Kobe's stats also included 10 boards and an unsightly 11 turnovers—the worst mark of his career. It was an inauspicious start for what figures to be a difficult nine-game roadtrip; Los Angeles is missing three of its big men, and Luke Walton is day-to-day as well. The Lakers remain winless in Detroit since the 2004 Finals. (More NBA stories.)
