The Montreal Canadiens' Chris Higgins scored a power play goal with less than two minutes left in regulation to tie the Atlanta Thrashers, but his efforts only resulted in an overtime loss for the Habs. Atlanta’s Ilya Kovalchuk pushed the decisive shootout goal past rookie goalie Carey Price, and when Alex Kovalev failed to match it, the victory went to Atlanta, reports the AP.
Thrashers goalie Johan Hedberg stopped 31 shots to help his team earn consecutive victories for the first time this season. The win makes Atlanta 4-2 under interim coach and GM Don Waddell, who replaced Bob Hartley after the team started the season 0-6. Atlanta scored twice in a one-minute span in the second period on unassisted goals from Eric Perrin and Slava Kozlov. (More hockey stories.)
